The CMX500 Rebel - 27YM
The addition of Honda E-Clutch technology, an all-new dash and revised colours refresh Europe’s most popular cruiser and take the CMX500 Rebel into the new year.
The CMX500 Rebel, Honda’s hugely popular A2 licence-friendly 500cc parallel twin-cylinder compact cruiser, is updated for 27YM courtesy of an all-new 3.5” circular TFT display featuring crisper graphics and a more intuitive design, paired with a new six button module on the lefthand handlebar. Everyday useability is boosted through the addition of Honda E-Clutch technology, whilst an overhauled colour palette rounds out the 27YM changes. Standard specification includes assist/slipper clutch, LED lighting and gear position indicator.
For many riders in their early 20s – Generation Z, who have grown up through the digital age – motorcycles mean so much more than just transport. They need to represent a lifestyle, an attitude, and allow them to express their own individual identity.
These riders’ expectations are different to those of the motorcycling mainstream and the machines that speak to them reflect this. They must fit in with their life but also contain the potential for further individualisation. Fusing tradition and ground-breaking new ideas and perspectives, the CMX500 Rebel set out to be that motorcycle.
Showcasing a classic, timeless look but imbued with a forward-looking, contemporary style all its own, the CMX500 Rebel was an instant hit on its introduction in 2017 and has been popular ever since, becoming the best-selling European model in the ‘custom’ category every year since 2021.
For 20YM, its ergonomics and practicality were boosted thanks to a revised seat and suspension settings, and the introduction of a gear position indicator. Both the headlight and taillight were new, and the addition of LED indicators meant all lighting became LED. A revised exhaust system, including new exhaust sensor, ensured EURO5 compliance. 21YM saw the Rebel family expand across Europe with the introduction of the CMX1100.
Accessible, easy to ride and easy to live with, the CMX500 Rebel goes its own way but also acts as blank canvas, ready for whatever its owner’s imagination has in store. It received some minor 25YM updates to keep it fresh and for 27YM it debuts a ‘second-generation HMI’, which comes with richer graphics and data relay, an improved user experience, and all-new features. The left-hand control system moves from four buttons to six, and for the CMX500 Rebel, this is all packed in to an all-new circular 3.5” TFT screen, in keeping with the custom aesthetic. Also new is the addition of Honda E-Clutch technology, bringing increased everyday versatility and comfort on the urban commute or out on the open road at a weekend. 27YM changes are rounded out by a revised palette of standard paint choices, for both the standard and ‘S’ Edition models.
Development of the Rebel began in North America, with an outlook geared toward firing the imagination of a younger generation of riders in a different way to traditional cruiser motorcycles. Powered by a 471cc parallel twin-cylinder engine, with strong bottom end torque and a smooth, linear power delivery, the Rebel is A2 licence friendly. For 25YM the engine was updated with new ECU settings and the addition of an OBD2-2 exhaust sensor.
The Rebel has been designed to be a slim motorcycle with a low seat height making it easy and unintimidating to manage at low speeds. Updated and improved for 25YM, the riding position is relaxed and neutral, with gently outstretched arms matched to mid-mounted footpegs.
The CMX500 Rebel’s tubular steel frame draws fresh, contemporary lines into stripped-back, fat-tyred ‘bobber’ style. Blacked out to the maximum, with the minimum of paint, it switches from solo-only to pillion-possible via two bolts.
Making its debut on the model for 27YM, a new 3.5-inch circular TFT display replaces the previous 100mm negative LCD dial. Featuring crisper resolution and revised graphics, it pairs with an all-new six-button control system to deliver enhanced functionality and more intuitive operation.
27YM sees the introduction of Honda E-Clutch technology, for increased everyday versatility and comfort, whether on the urban commute or taking on twisty roads on a longer run. The new colours and increased flexibility ensure the CMX500 Rebel continues its journey into the hearts and minds of European riders.
